Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) is an autonomous organization established to administer Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs). The concept of Navodaya Vidyalayas emerged from the National Policy on Education 1986, which envisioned setting up residential schools of excellence in every district of the country. The first two Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas were started in 1985-86, and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti was registered as an autonomous organization under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, in 1986. The initiative was a visionary step to bridge the rural-urban educational gap and provide equal opportunities to gifted rural children. Today, there are over 660 JNVs functioning across India, with one in almost every district.
